Parental Visitation Policy - Special Education

It shall be the policy of the Martha's Vineyard Public Schools to work with parents, guardians and their designees to build a strong partnership for the benefit of all students. Both best practice of the district and Massachusetts General Law require that parents, guardians and their designees be allowed and encouraged to observe students in their classroom setting.

This policy has been established to ensure that these observations occur in a positive and appropriate manner, which does not negatively impact the integrity of the program, the safety of the children involved, and disclosure of information about children without appropriate permission. The district requires only the parent, guardian or designee to submit a request in writing at least 24 hours prior to any observation. The building principal shall review the request, talk with program staff and the parents, guardians or designee and arrange for the observation, following the guidelines established in M.G.L. Chapter 71B, Section 3 and the Technical Assistance Advisory SPED 2009-2.
